Toho Co. is doubling down on animated films for 2025, scheduling seven major releases and six additional titles through its specialized distribution arm as Japan’s largest movie studio seeks to capitalize on growing global appetite for anime.
The Tokyo-based company unveiled a slate of 30 films, including new installments of proven box-office draws like Detective Conan and Doraemon. The studio is also partnering with Sony Pictures for international distribution of “Scarlett,” the latest work from acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda.
In a notable shift, Toho secured distribution rights for the latest Gundam theatrical release, previously handled by rival Shochiku Co. The mecha franchise film will open across 400 screens in January, marking one of the widest releases for the genre.
Through its TOHO NEXT label, which handles smaller releases, the company is distributing six more anime titles including adaptations of “The Rose of Versailles” and “Jujutsu Kaisen.”
The studio is also venturing into live-action territory with an adaptation of Makoto Shinkai’s animated film “5 Centimeters per Second,” starring Hokuto Matsumura, scheduled for fall 2025.
The strategy underscores Toho’s increasing focus on animation as Japanese anime continues to draw international audiences through streaming platforms and theatrical releases.
