Kolmar Korea has developed a novel stabilization technology for hybrid sunscreens that combines organic and inorganic UV filters, potentially reshaping the sun protection market.

The technology, named “UV-DUO PLUS,” solves a persistent challenge in mixed sunscreens where ingredient aggregation creates gaps in protection. By coating inorganic filters with organic ones, the company prevents clumping that can compromise effectiveness.

Testing shows the formulation blocks “LONG UVA” rays, which contribute to photoaging, with 24.8% greater effectiveness at the 400nm wavelength compared to conventional single-filter products. The sunscreen has received a SPF 50+ PA++++ rating and regulatory approval from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

While mixed sunscreens combining both types of filters exist in the market, Kolmar Korea claims its technology creates the first true hybrid that “perfectly combines” organic and inorganic components. The company has secured patent registration for the composition and is pursuing international patents.

Kolmar Korea’s innovation builds on its 2022 establishment of the industry’s first “UV Tech Innovation Lab” and portfolio of over 70 UV protection patents.

The announcement coincides with Kolmar Korea’s expansion plans in North America, where its second U.S. plant is scheduled to begin operations in the first half of 2025. This facility will increase the company’s production capacity from 180 million to 300 million units, focusing on basic cosmetics and sunscreens.
