Hyosung Heavy Industries is expanding its foothold in South Korea’s emerging hydrogen power sector through a new partnership with state-run utility Korea Southern Power.
The companies will collaborate on hydrogen engine power generation projects and clean hydrogen production, according to their memorandum of understanding signed at Hyosung’s Changwon plant. The agreement builds on Hyosung’s recent advances in hydrogen technology, including its 1-megawatt hydrogen combustion engine that began commercial operations in April.
The generator, installed at the company’s chemical plant in Ulsan, has cleared safety inspections from national gas and electrical regulators. Unlike solar and wind power that depend on weather conditions, the hydrogen engine can provide consistent power output while producing zero carbon emissions, the company said.
CEO Woo Tae-hee said the technology will help reduce emissions while ensuring grid stability. The partnership aims to accelerate adoption of hydrogen power as South Korea pursues its clean energy goals.
While Hyosung touts the project’s environmental benefits, the high cost of hydrogen production and limited infrastructure remain key challenges for wider deployment of the technology in South Korea’s power sector. The company did not disclose financial terms or specific timeline targets for the collaboration.
