Hyosung Heavy Industries has marked a significant breakthrough in the global energy sector by successfully commercializing the world’s first hydrogen engine generator. This landmark achievement was announced following the full-scale operation of a 1 MW hydrogen engine generator at its Ulsan Hyosung Chemical Yongyeon Plant 2, which began in mid-April.
The uniqueness of Hyosung Heavy Industries’ generator lies in its capability to produce electricity solely using hydrogen, distinguishing it from other hydrogen-blended generators that also rely on natural gas or coal. This development not only positions Hyosung at the forefront of hydrogen technology but also underscores its commitment to pioneering sustainable energy solutions.
Significantly, this innovation propels forward the timeline for hydrogen adoption, which was previously targeted by the government for 2050, by about 20 years. Hyosung Heavy Industries has also set a benchmark in safety standards. It is the only domestic company this year to pass the rigorous safety inspections conducted by the Korea Gas Safety Corporation and the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation, earning the necessary approvals for commercial operations.
The introduction of this hydrogen engine generator is poised to play a crucial role in helping companies transition towards sustainable manufacturing practices. Moreover, it aligns with the goals of the RE100 initiative and is supported by the upcoming implementation of the Special Act on Promotion of Distributed Energy starting June.
