Voltage Inc., a Japanese mobile content developer, reported deepening losses for its fiscal first quarter as declining revenue from romance games offset growth in its digital comic business.
The Tokyo-based company posted revenue of ¥592 million ($3.8 million) for the three months through September, down 18% from a year earlier. Operating losses widened to ¥59 million from ¥49 million, while the net loss reached ¥51 million compared with ¥68 million a year ago.
Romance games targeting Japanese women fell 22% to ¥336 million, hurt by weakness in both avatar-based and story-driven titles. The English and Asian markets segment dropped 30% to ¥51 million on similar declines. Male-oriented games slipped 10% to ¥147 million as card-based titles lost momentum.
Digital comics provided the sole bright spot, climbing 5% to ¥56 million on strength in the company’s comic label offerings.
Rising outsourcing costs from advance investments weighed on profitability across all segments. Voltage declined to provide full-year guidance, citing volatility in the mobile gaming market that makes reliable forecasting difficult. The company operates romance simulation games and manages digital storefronts for comic content.
