South Korean cable manufacturer Taihan Cable & Solution landed a 110 billion won ($84 million) contract to build an ultra-high voltage power grid in Stockholm, expanding its European market presence.
The project, awarded by Sweden’s state-owned power authority, will connect Stockholm’s Anneberg and Skansstull areas with 420kV underground AC cables – the highest voltage specification used in Swedish underground systems.
The contract adds to Taihan’s growing global portfolio. The company secured orders worth 720 billion won in the United States and an 840 billion won project in Singapore this year. Its order backlog reached 2.33 trillion won by the third quarter’s end, hitting a record high.
While company officials cited their track record in the UK, Germany and Netherlands as key factors in winning the Swedish bid, the project faces technical challenges. The installation requires complex underground cable systems and extensive testing in Stockholm’s urban environment.
The deal reflects Sweden’s push to upgrade its power infrastructure as Stockholm grapples with increasing energy demands. For Taihan, it represents another step in its European expansion, though the company will need to navigate Sweden’s strict technical standards and regulatory requirements.
The project’s timeline and specific completion dates were not disclosed.
