Samsung Electro-Mechanics is set to provide custom camera modules for Boston Dynamics’ Atlas humanoid robots, marking the company’s push into advanced robotics technology. The deal replaces Intel’s RealSense cameras currently used in the robots.
The partnership builds on growing ties between Samsung Group and Hyundai Motor, which owns Boston Dynamics. The new Atlas models featuring Samsung’s camera systems are expected to launch around 2030.
The collaboration extends beyond robotics. Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans to supply hybrid camera lenses to Hyundai Motor and Kia starting in 2025. Additionally, Hyundai Motor is exploring partnership with Samsung Electronics for autonomous driving chips using 5-nanometer technology.
The move follows Samsung Electronics’ agreement with Tesla last year to produce 4-nanometer chips for Level-5 autonomous vehicles.
Under CEO Chang Duckhyun’s leadership since 2021, Samsung Electro-Mechanics aims to diversify from its traditional smartphone camera business into automotive, robotics, and AI applications. Industry observers note this represents a broader strategic alignment between Samsung and Hyundai Motor across multiple technology sectors.
The value of the contract wasn’t disclosed.
