POSCO International completed construction of its first European motor core manufacturing facility in Poland, marking the South Korean company’s latest attempt to expand its footprint in the electric vehicle components market.
The 94.1 billion won ($67 million) plant in Brzeg will begin trial runs this month before starting mass production in December, the company said Thursday. The facility is designed to produce 1.2 million motor cores annually by 2030, with initial shipments headed to Hyundai and Kia’s European assembly lines.
Motor cores, which convert electrical energy into mechanical power, represent a critical component in electric and hybrid vehicles. The Polish operation forms part of POSCO’s broader manufacturing network that includes facilities in Korea, Mexico, India and China.
The company aims to lift its global production capacity to 7.5 million units by 2030 from 4 million currently, targeting more than 10% of the worldwide market. POSCO has already secured contracts for 35 million units through 2033, according to company statements.
The timing of the expansion comes as European regulators mandate a complete phase-out of new combustion engine vehicle sales by 2035, though recent softening in EV demand has prompted some automakers to scale back near-term production targets.
