LS Marine Solution secured the preferred supplier position for submarine cable installation at the 1GW Haesong Offshore Wind Project, marking another step in South Korea’s aggressive renewable energy expansion.

The Haesong project is planned to be built off the west coast of Shinan, Jeonnam, and consists of two 504 MW phases, Haesong 1 and Haesong 3, developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. The selection positions LS Marine Solution to handle marine surveys, cable laying, burial operations and connection testing for what CIP calls Korea’s largest offshore wind development.

The announcement follows LS Marine Solution’s recent completion of the 96 MW Jeonnam 1 offshore wind project that recently entered commercial operations. CEO Kim Byung-ok cited this track record as validation of the company’s technical capabilities, according to local reports.

LS Marine Solution plans to invest 345.8 billion won ($252.2 million) to build a 13,000-ton-class CLV, to be put into operation by 2028, which would rank among the world’s top five cable-laying vessels by capacity. The company currently operates the GL2030 vessel and recently expanded its loading capacity from 4,000 tons to 7,000 tons.

South Korea targets 14.3 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 40.7 GW by 2038, representing massive growth from the current installed base of approximately 200MW. CIP’s Korean portfolio includes roughly 5GW of projects across multiple provinces as the country races to meet renewable energy targets.
