LS Cable & System has activated a 3,000-kilowatt solar power generation system at its submarine cable factory in Donghae, Gangwon Province, as part of a strategy to reduce electricity costs and strengthen its global competitiveness through eco-friendly production.

The solar installation is expected to generate approximately 3,600 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, equivalent to the power consumption of about 1,200 households per year. Over a 20-year operational period, the company projects electricity cost savings exceeding 7 billion won ($4.8 million).

The initiative represents a significant step in the South Korean cable manufacturer’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management framework and its broader goal of achieving carbon neutrality.

The company’s green push comes as global energy firms increasingly require cable manufacturers to utilize renewable energy in their production processes. Major clients including European renewable energy company Ørsted and German transmission system operator TenneT are actively pursuing decarbonization throughout their supply chains.

LS Cable has already demonstrated its commitment to environmental goals by becoming the first cable manufacturer in South Korea to receive approval for its carbon reduction strategy from the Science Based Targets initiative in December 2024, committing to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The Donghae facility, which houses Asia’s largest high-voltage direct current undersea cable factory, has received approximately 700 billion won ($522 million) in investments since its establishment in 2008. The site has expanded to include four manufacturing plants, with the most recent addition featuring a 172-meter-high vertical continuous vulcanization tower completed in 2023.
