LG Innotek is rolling out a new in-cabin camera module that monitors driver alertness and passenger safety with a single device, marking the Korean electronics maker’s push to capture a bigger slice of the automotive components market.
The module, which packs a 5-megapixel sensor with a 143-degree field of view, can detect driver drowsiness and track passenger seatbelt usage across multiple rows. The camera’s size was reduced by 15% compared to current models through a new bonding technique, allowing flexible mounting options throughout the vehicle interior.
The company sees this technology as crucial to its goal of expanding its vehicle sensing business to more than 2 trillion won ($1.5 billion) by 2030. CEO Moon Hyuk-soo said vehicle sensing solutions, including cameras and LiDAR, will be central to LG Innotek’s autonomous driving component strategy.
The global automotive camera module market is expected to grow 7% annually, reaching $10.8 billion by 2030 from $6.9 billion in 2023, according to company data.
LG Innotek plans to showcase the RGB-IR equipped camera, which maintains monitoring capabilities in low-light conditions, at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. The company is targeting automakers in North America and Europe for potential partnerships.
