LG Innotek Co. is expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities through a new partnership with Intel Corp. to enhance quality control across its manufacturing facilities.

The Seoul-based electronics components maker signed a memorandum of understanding with the US chipmaker on April 8 to deploy Intel’s AI vision inspection solution throughout its production lines. The technology uses integrated graphics processing units embedded within central processing units, eliminating the need for costly external GPUs.

The partnership aims to raise inspection accuracy to nearly 100% while accelerating AI learning time by up to 1.5 times, according to the company. LG Innotek began implementing the technology in its mobile camera module production last year and plans to expand it to other facilities, including its advanced semiconductor substrate plant in Gumi.

The move comes as manufacturers increasingly replace human quality inspectors with automated systems. For LG Innotek, which supplies components to major smartphone makers, precision is critical to maintaining its competitive position in high-specification camera modules and semiconductor substrates.

Last June, the company reported that AI technologies had already reduced defect rates by up to 90% in key inspection processes. LG Innotek posted a 21.1% increase in operating profit to $128 million in the first quarter of 2024, partly driven by improved manufacturing efficiency.

“This collaboration is accelerating our smart factory deployment,” said Lee Sang-seok, vice president of LG Innotek’s production innovation center. The companies also plan to deepen their cooperation in developing intelligent production systems.
