LG Energy Solution has secured a contract to supply batteries for a major energy storage system project by Poland’s state-owned power company PGE. The deal, valued at trillions of won, involves providing lithium iron phosphate batteries manufactured at the company’s Wroclaw facility in Poland.
The South Korean battery manufacturer will begin supplying the ESS-specific LFP batteries in 2026, marking its first European-produced ESS battery supply. Commercial operations for the approximately 1GWh facility in northern Poland’s Zarnowiec region are targeted for 2027.
According to the company, the contract follows a turnkey approach, with LG Energy Solution collaborating with European partners to deliver containerized battery systems alongside engineering, procurement, and construction services.
The agreement comes as LG Energy Solution adapts to changing market conditions by converting some electric vehicle battery production lines to ESS manufacturing at its Polish facility. This strategic pivot provides the company with a stable customer as it reorients parts of its business.
Kim Hyung-sik, executive vice president of the ESS battery division, indicated the contract would support Poland’s energy transition while establishing LG Energy Solution’s presence in Europe’s growing ESS market.
The project aims to enhance regional grid stability and expand renewable energy integration in Poland’s power network.
