LG Display demonstrated its latest advance in flexible screen technology with a new stretchable display that can expand by 50%, marking significant progress in the race to develop shape-shifting screens.
The South Korean display maker showcased the 12-inch prototype, which can stretch to 18 inches, at its Science Park facility in Seoul. The screen maintains 100 pixels per inch resolution and full RGB color capabilities even when extended, according to the company.
The demonstration represents a major improvement over LG Display’s 2022 prototype, which could only stretch by 20%. The company achieved this enhancement by refining silicon materials similar to those used in contact lenses and developing new wiring structures.
The display can reportedly withstand more than 10,000 stretching cycles and maintain performance in extreme temperatures. Using micro-LED technology with components as small as 40 micrometers, the screen aims to combine durability with image quality.
While LG Display positions the technology for applications ranging from automotive displays to smart clothing, analysts note that commercial viability remains uncertain. The project, backed by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, involves collaboration with 19 domestic research institutions.
The company’s CTO Soo-young Yoon indicated plans to continue developing the technology through industry partnerships, though no timeline for commercialization was provided.
