Korea Aerospace Industries has taken a stake in artificial intelligence startup GenGenAI, securing technology it says is crucial for developing autonomous pilot systems for future military aircraft.
KAI invested 6 billion won ($4.4 million) for a 9.87% stake in GenGenAI, becoming the company’s second-largest shareholder, the aircraft manufacturer said. The AI firm, established in 2022, creates synthetic data generation technology that can rapidly produce training datasets for automatic target identification systems.
The investment aligns with KAI’s broader push into AI technologies for defense applications. The company has also backed AI firms specializing in big data, satellite image analysis and decision-making algorithms.
GenGenAI’s platform can reduce data collection time by up to 90% while cutting costs by half, according to KAI. This efficiency is particularly valuable for military applications where real-world training data may be scarce or difficult to obtain.
KAI President Kang Goo-young said GenGenAI’s capabilities will accelerate the development of AI pilots for future battlefield systems. The company was recognized in the “Defense Innovation Company 100” last year and won an AI Innovation Award at CES 2025 for its GenGenStudio platform.
