ANA Holdings announced plans to purchase 77 new aircraft worth approximately ¥2.2 trillion ($14.7 billion) at list prices, marking the largest single order in the Japanese airline’s history.

The ambitious expansion includes 18 Boeing 787 wide-body jets for international routes, which will boost ANA’s total 787 fleet to 120 aircraft. The company expects this move to increase its international flight capacity to 1.5 times its fiscal 2023 levels by 2030.

For domestic operations, ANA will acquire 20 E190-E2 jets from Brazil’s Embraer, each configured to seat approximately 100 passengers. These aircraft fill a gap left by the canceled Mitsubishi SpaceJet program, which ANA had previously considered for its regional fleet.

The order also includes 14 A321neo aircraft from Airbus and 12 Boeing 737s for ANA’s mainline operations, while its low-cost subsidiary Peach Aviation will receive 13 narrow-body Airbus aircraft.

This fleet expansion comes as the International Air Transport Association projects global passenger numbers to reach 5.2 billion in 2025, a 6.7% increase from 2024 and the first time the figure will exceed 5 billion. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to lead this growth, with global passenger numbers forecast to increase at a compound annual rate of 3.8% through 2043.

The timing puts ANA in increasingly fierce competition for new aircraft as airlines worldwide scramble to secure deliveries amid surging travel demand and constrained supply, particularly from Boeing as it navigates ongoing production challenges.
