Hyundai Motor Group’s Chinese hydrogen subsidiary has secured what the company calls the largest hydrogen bus order in China to date, winning a contract to supply 224 units to Guangzhou’s state-owned public transit operator.
HTWO Guangzhou, working with local commercial vehicle manufacturer Kaiwo Group, topped a competitive tender conducted by Guangzhou Public Transport Group, which manages the city’s buses, subways, ferries, and taxis. The transit authority plans to procure 450 hydrogen buses total, with the Hyundai-Kaiwo partnership capturing roughly half the order. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The 8.5-meter buses feature HTWO’s 90-kilowatt fuel cell system, offering a claimed range of 576 kilometers and five-minute refueling capability.
Combined with 25 buses secured in a separate November tender, the partners expect to deliver 249 units to Guangzhou by year-end. Hyundai said it anticipates deploying more than 1,000 vehicles equipped with its hydrogen fuel cell systems across China by the end of 2025.
HTWO Guangzhou, completed in 2023, represents Hyundai’s first overseas hydrogen fuel cell production facility, with annual capacity of 6,500 systems. The Korean automaker has been aggressively pursuing partnerships with Chinese commercial vehicle makers as it seeks to establish a foothold in the country’s nascent hydrogen mobility market.
