Hyundai Motor secured a contract to supply electric buses to Bali through a tender organized by the Global Green Growth Institute, marking the tourist destination’s first deployment of battery-powered public transit vehicles.

The Korean automaker will provide 10 County Electric minibuses following an October selection process that evaluated vehicle quality, after-sales support capabilities, and prior experience with environmental development projects. The contract stems from an April agreement between South Korea’s climate ministry and Indonesian authorities to transform Bali’s transportation infrastructure.

GGGI is implementing an ₩11 billion ($7.6 million) program running through December 2027 to pilot electric vehicle systems and develop green transport investment frameworks for Bali. The initiative targets emission reductions in a sector expected to contribute nearly 10% toward Indonesia’s greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Hyundai’s County Electric features a 128kWh battery delivering up to 303 kilometers of range, with 72-minute fast-charging capability. The model has primarily operated in South Korea since its 2020 launch and carries between 15 and 33 passengers.

The automaker previously supplied the same model to Surabaya in November 2023, though questions remain about scalability beyond pilot programs. Bali’s transition to electric public transport faces infrastructure challenges including charging station development and grid capacity constraints that could limit broader adoption timelines.
