Hyundai Rotem secured a $165.2 million contract to supply 39 double-decker passenger cars to Boston’s transit authority, building on its decade-long partnership with the Massachusetts system.

The deal marks the fourth major order from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority since 2008, bringing Hyundai Rotem’s total car deliveries to 238 units. The latest contract represents 6.6% of the Korean manufacturer’s 2023 revenue of 3.59 trillion won ($2.7 billion).

The order follows MBTA’s August purchase of 41 similar cars, signaling the authority’s growing reliance on the Korean supplier to modernize its aging fleet. Hyundai Rotem first entered the Boston market in 2008 with a $170 million contract for 75 cars, followed by a $305 million deal in 2019 for 83 units.

The company, a unit of Hyundai Motor Group, has expanded its U.S. presence as American transit systems seek to replace outdated equipment. The manufacturer competes with established players in the rail car market while leveraging its expertise in rolling stock and defense products.
