Hyundai Engineering & Construction has been selected as a contractor for Finland’s new nuclear power plant project, strengthening the South Korean firm’s position in Europe’s expanding nuclear sector.
Finland’s state-owned energy company Fortum named the Hyundai E&C-Westinghouse Consortium as one of three suppliers for its Early Works Agreement after a two-year study period. The consortium will assess technological requirements, review licensing issues, and establish construction plans for the AP1000 nuclear plant model.
The Korean construction giant is simultaneously working with Westinghouse on Slovenia’s Krško New Nuclear Power Plant Project, where they’re conducting a technical feasibility study through the third quarter of 2025. Located about 80 kilometers east of Ljubljana, the project would build a new AP1000 reactor near an existing nuclear facility.
These developments follow Hyundai E&C’s 2022 strategic agreement with Westinghouse to jointly pursue global nuclear plant contracts. The company has already secured a design contract for Bulgaria’s Kozloduy nuclear power plant, as Europe increasingly turns to nuclear energy to enhance energy security.
