Hyosung TNC Corp., a global leader in spandex manufacturing, is taking a significant leap towards sustainability with a planned $1 billion investment in Vietnam for the development of new bio-textile materials plants. This strategic move aims to bolster the company’s future growth engine within eco-friendly industries. The South Korean giant received approval last week from the provincial government of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Vietnam, to construct a new bio-butanediol (BDO) factory, which is crucial for producing eco-friendly spandex fiber. With an initial annual capacity of 50,000 tons projected for the first half of 2026, Hyosung TNC plans to quadruple this output to 200,000 tons annually, marking a significant advancement in sustainable textile production.

Bio-BDO, derived entirely from sugarcane instead of traditional fossil materials, represents a pivotal shift towards greener manufacturing practices. This initiative is part of Hyosung Group Chairman Cho Hyun-joon’s long-term vision to transform conventional fossil raw materials into sustainable alternatives, aiming to make the bio-business a core pillar of Hyosung’s strategy for the next century. The move aligns with the growing global demand for sustainable textile solutions, especially against the backdrop of stricter environmental regulations in Europe and the Americas.

Hyosung TNC’s commitment to sustainability is not new; the company has been a pioneer in eco-friendly textile innovation, developing the regen, South Korea’s first eco-friendly polyester yarn, and launching regen spandex made from recycled materials. The partnership with Geno, a U.S. biotech firm, further underscores Hyosung TNC’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions and leading the eco-friendly textile market globally.

The new investment in Vietnam is set to establish the world’s largest bio-spandex production complex, integrating the entire manufacturing process from raw materials to fiber. This not only enhances production efficiency and cost competitiveness but also significantly reduces logistics expenses and environmental impact. With this bold move, Hyosung TNC is poised to meet its goal of generating 20% of its total spandex sales from sustainable products by 2030, up from the current 4%, cementing its position as a leader in the global shift towards eco-friendly textile manufacturing.
