HD Hyundai Infracore has secured an order for 100 large excavators from two Ethiopian mining development companies, strengthening its foothold in Africa’s growing construction equipment market.
The deal involves 36-ton crawler-type excavators that will be delivered by June, the company said Tuesday. The order comes as Ethiopia ramps up mining operations for minerals including cobalt and lithium, while also pursuing major infrastructure projects like a new international airport near Addis Ababa designed to handle 110 million passengers annually.
The South Korean manufacturer has established a dominant position in Ethiopia’s equipment market, selling 212 units of the same excavator model last year and capturing a 57% market share. Ethiopia represents more than one-third of HD Hyundai Infracore’s African sales, according to company officials.
This contract follows impressive growth across Africa, where the company’s sales of excavators and medium-to-large wheel loaders jumped 34.8% to 18,200 units last year from 13,500 units previously.
HD Hyundai Infracore plans to use its strong Ethiopian presence as a platform for expansion into neighboring countries, part of a broader strategy to extend its sales operations from the Middle East deeper into the African continent as infrastructure and social overhead capital projects drive equipment demand.
