HD Hyundai has taken a bold step forward by partnering with Google Cloud to create a generative artificial intelligence (AI) platform. This move marks a significant collaboration between a traditional shipbuilding company and an IT giant, aiming to leverage AI in creating new content from existing data such as text, audio, and images.

The initiative will see HD Hyundai enhancing productivity using Vertex AI, Google Cloud’s bespoke AI platform designed for businesses. The partnership’s goal is to boost work efficiency by automating and optimizing repetitive tasks. Starting in January 2024, the two companies will focus on developing industry-specific AI solutions and services, enhancing customer digital experiences, and nurturing AI expertise.

A key application of this technology in shipbuilding will involve AI-based work instructions, providing a potential solution to manpower shortages. AI is expected to predict labor supply and demand in various sectors by analyzing process progress and delivery schedules. While specific plans for implementing AI in analyzing key business personnel are still under development, the intention is clear.

Another significant aspect of this partnership is improving customer service. HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, known for its heavy machinery like excavators and forklifts, has already implemented this AI platform in its after-sales service call center since July. This AI system is designed to overcome human limitations in handling complex product structures and extensive instructions, thereby enhancing efficiency in customer service.

HD Hyundai is committed to accelerating digital business innovation by integrating ‘generative AI’ technology into its core businesses, including shipbuilding and construction machinery. The company has been a pioneer in AI adoption, with the establishment of its AI Center in January and collaborations with POSCO for smart unmanned technology and Siemens for building a smart shipyard.

Philip Moyer, Vice President of Google Cloud, will further elucidate this partnership during a keynote session at CES 2024 in Las Vegas next month, highlighting the future direction of HD Hyundai’s digital and AI endeavors.
