GS Engineering & Construction Corp. secured a AUD 570 million ($370 million) contract to build twin-bore tunnels for Melbourne’s suburban rail network, extending its reach in Australia’s infrastructure sector.

The South Korean construction firm will work with Italy’s Webuild SpA and France’s VINCI Construction to develop a 10-kilometer underground passage for the Suburban Rail Loop East project. Each company holds a 33.5% stake in the venture.

The contract from Victoria state’s rail authority marks GS Engineering’s second major Australian project since 2021, when it entered the market with the North East Link development valued at 10 trillion won ($7.6 billion).

The new tunnel project includes 39 emergency exits and two underground station excavations. It’s part of Melbourne’s broader 90-kilometer rail expansion, designed to enhance connectivity across Victoria’s capital city.

Construction starts this year, with completion scheduled for 2035. The development adds to GS Engineering’s growing portfolio of international infrastructure projects as the company seeks to diversify beyond its home market.

Success in the competitive Australian market could position the Korean builder for more infrastructure contracts as the country upgrades its transportation networks.
