Foxconn Technology, a metal casing manufacturer within Taiwan’s Foxconn empire, announced plans to invest US$1 billion (NT$29.8 billion) in American operations over the next decade, according to company filings yesterday.

The subsidiary outlined what it calls a “Made in America” strategy that would integrate mold development, basic manufacturing, and electronics contract manufacturing. The company cited smart manufacturing and artificial intelligence applications as central to the expansion plans.

The announcement comes as Foxconn continues to face scrutiny over its troubled Wisconsin project, which promised $10 billion in investment and 13,000 jobs but has delivered only about 1,100 positions after multiple plan revisions. The Taiwanese manufacturer has a history of making similar investment pledges that failed to materialize, including promised facilities in Pennsylvania and Indonesia.

Hon Hai’s latest commitment lacks specific details about locations, timelines, or employment targets. The company said the investment would create a manufacturing platform with “high flexibility, intelligent decision-making and sustainable competitiveness” while deepening North American market supply chains.

Foxconn’s Wisconsin facility was once dubbed “the eighth wonder of the world” by former President Trump but was ultimately scaled back to a $672 million investment after the company repeatedly changed its plans. State analysts had questioned the economic viability from the start, noting Wisconsin lacked crucial suppliers for flat-panel display production.

The metal casing unit’s parent company reported strong recent financial performance, with July 2025 revenue reaching NT$613.86 billion, up 7.25% year-over-year. However, investors may remain cautious given the company’s track record of ambitious announcements that fall short of delivery.
