Japanese mobile game developer Akatsuki Inc. posted a 51% surge in operating profit for the fiscal first half, powered by the strong performance of its Dragon Ball Z mobile game developed with Bandai Namco Entertainment.
Operating profit reached ¥2.99 billion ($20 million) in the six months through September, while revenue climbed 8% to ¥12.5 billion. The Tokyo-based company’s gaming division, which accounts for over 90% of sales, saw profit rise 15% as Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle topped app store revenue charts across major markets.
The gaming unit is shifting focus toward sophisticated 3D titles that can run on multiple devices and support multiple languages. This strategic pivot comes as Akatsuki pours resources into new game development, even as research costs eat into margins.
The smaller comics division turned profitable, posting ¥64 million in earnings compared to a loss last year. The unit benefited from expanding distribution partnerships and increased viewership of titles adapted for film.
Akatsuki declined to provide full-year guidance, citing market volatility in mobile gaming and new initiatives in its digital comics business.
