Doosan Enerbility is setting up a factory to produce Siemens Gamesa’s 14-megawatt offshore wind turbines in Changwon, South Korea, advancing a partnership formed in 2022.

The preliminary work agreement signed March 11 initiates the design phase for the manufacturing plant and production systems at Doosan’s Changwon facility. Siemens Gamesa will provide technology transfer, manpower support and training to enhance Doosan’s capabilities in assembling nacelles for offshore wind turbines.

Siemens Gamesa, the wind power division of Germany’s Siemens Energy, leads the global offshore wind market with 28 gigawatts of installed capacity. Doosan has been in the wind power business since 2005 and holds the highest domestic supply record for offshore wind power in South Korea.

The collaboration comes as South Korea pursues renewable energy development to reduce carbon emissions. Recent competitive bidding for fixed-price wind power contracts resulted in the selection of five offshore and six onshore wind projects.

Siemens Gamesa secured contracts for three offshore wind projects totaling 1,282MW, while Doosan was chosen as the preferred bidder for the 104MW Yawol Offshore Wind Project. For these projects, Siemens Gamesa plans to supply nacelles from Doosan’s new Changwon factory.
