Digital Garage announced the launch of AppPay, Japan’s first online shopping mall service that allows users to purchase digital content from various apps outside the app itself. The service, which debuted on June 4th, has already been integrated by popular apps such as Grand Summoners, Hinakoi, Nogizaka46 Love, Sakukoi, Sengoku A LIVE, and Alice Gear Aegis.
AppPay enables app operators to easily set up a payment function for in-app purchases within the “App Pay” system, significantly lowering the burden of payment fees. Users benefit from new payment options and unique advantages previously unavailable within the app ecosystem.
Initially targeting game app operators and users, Digital Garage plans to expand AppPay’s services to other sectors, including comics and video distribution. This move aligns with global trends towards more open digital markets, following legal shifts in the EU and the US aimed at fostering fair competition and reducing the monopolistic constraints of traditional app stores.
The launch of AppPay comes as Japan approaches a pivotal moment in digital market regulation, with the recent passing of the Smartphone Software Competition Promotion Bill by the House of Representatives. This legislation, expected to be enacted in the current Diet session, underscores the country’s commitment to promoting healthy market competition.
Digital Garage’s CEO, Kaoru Hayashi, expressed optimism about the service’s potential to invigorate various businesses and enhance user experiences. “The opening up of payment methods on smartphone apps will revitalize various businesses and contribute greatly to improving user experience and corporate management efficiency,” said Hayashi.
The AppPay service includes a comprehensive suite of functions such as payment systems, web page generation (CMS), customer support, and marketing. By registering with AppPay, users gain access to multiple payment methods, including credit cards, simplifying the process of paying for app charges.
Looking forward, Digital Garage aims to support app developers in setting up their own stores and expanding their reach, both domestically and internationally. The company’s strategic focus, encapsulated in the “DG FinTech Shift,” integrates payments, data, and technology to drive business growth across various sectors.
With the full-scale launch of AppPay, Digital Garage is poised to lead the charge in transforming Japan’s digital payment landscape, fostering innovation and competition in the smartphone app market.
