Daewoo Engineering & Construction has completed a crucial wharf at Iraq’s Al Faw New Port, marking a significant step in the country’s ambitious infrastructure project. The South Korean firm received the taking over certificate for the 1,750-meter-long, 40-meter-wide wharf, which was finished in about 37 months without delays.
The construction involved driving approximately 1,700 steel pipe piles and pouring 130,000 cubic meters of concrete. Daewoo E&C employed advanced techniques, including the cantitravel method for pile driving and precast method for superstructure work, to expedite the process.
Iraq’s government views the Al Faw New Port as essential for reducing the nation’s oil dependence and establishing a land-based trade route connecting to Europe and Central Asia. The project aims to position Al Faw among the world’s top 12 hub ports.
As Phase 1 nears completion, the port’s development carries significant geopolitical implications, potentially altering regional trade dynamics. However, challenges remain in diversifying Iraq’s economy and ensuring the project’s long-term success in a volatile global market.
