China Airlines finalized an order for 10 Airbus A350-1000 wide-body jets today as the Taiwanese carrier pushes forward with a major fleet modernization strategy aimed at strengthening its international route network.

The aircraft, which will begin delivery in 2029, will primarily serve long-haul routes to North America and Europe, replacing Boeing 777 aircraft, according to Chairman Kao Shing-Hwang. The deal concludes negotiations announced in December 2024 and represents part of China Airlines’ broader $11.85 billion investment that also includes 10 Boeing 777-9 passenger jets and four 777-8F freighters ordered separately.

The airline already operates 15 A350-900s, which will undergo cabin renovations starting in 2027, with Airbus providing technical integration services. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, the new aircraft promises 25% better fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions compared to previous generation models, supporting the carrier’s 2050 net-zero carbon goal.

“Our investment reflects our commitment to improving the travel experience while supporting international growth,” Kao said. While studying potential new destinations including India and Finland, the chairman noted capacity constraints have forced careful network planning. He expects passenger services to exceed 2019 levels this year but cited uncertainty in cargo operations despite positive e-commerce trends.

The timing of this finalized order comes shortly after Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency, though China Airlines has previously denied political considerations influence its fleet decisions despite being majority government-owned. Airbus reports its A350 family has received more than 1,360 orders from 60 customers globally, with 645 aircraft delivered as of February 2025.
