China Airlines saw its first-quarter profit soar 47% as robust travel demand and higher cargo rates boosted Taiwan’s largest carrier during a traditionally strong travel season.

The Taipei-based airline reported a net income of NT$4.19 billion (US$138.5 million) in the January-March period, up from the same quarter last year, according to a statement released Thursday. Earnings per share climbed to NT$0.69 from NT$0.51 a year earlier, setting both a Q1 record and the second-highest quarterly result in the company’s history.

Revenue jumped to NT$52.77 billion, with passenger operations generating NT$32.69 billion, up 12.3% quarter-on-quarter as Lunar New Year and winter holiday travel fueled results. Cargo revenue surged 27.5% year-on-year to NT$15.69 billion amid increased market demand that drove both higher shipping volumes and rates.

The carrier is expanding its summer schedule with additional flights to destinations including Seoul, Vienna, and Jakarta, while planning to strengthen its southern Taiwan operations with increased frequencies and larger aircraft. The airline cited its leading position in direct flights to Europe and Australia among Taiwanese carriers.

Looking ahead, China Airlines said it’s adjusting its cargo network in response to international tariff policy shifts, optimizing freight sources while maintaining profitability amid shifting global trade patterns.
