Akatsuki Inc. reported a 4% drop in revenue to 16.16 billion yen ($108 million) for the nine months through December, as the Japanese mobile game developer ramped up spending on new titles.
Operating profit declined 9.1% to 1.42 billion yen as research and development costs increased, primarily driven by the company’s pivot toward 3D multi-device games with global language support. Net income rose 9.4% to 737 million yen, boosted by investment gains and foreign exchange effects.
The company’s main title “Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle,” developed with Bandai Namco Entertainment, topped app store rankings in 10 regions including the U.S., Japan, and France during global campaigns tied to the “Dragon Ball DAIMA” anime series.
Its gaming segment revenue fell 8.9% to 14.39 billion yen, while the smaller comics division saw an 81.2% jump in sales to 899 million yen as the company expanded its original content lineup and licensing deals.
Akatsuki withheld its full-year forecast, citing volatile market conditions in the mobile gaming sector and ongoing business model transitions in its digital comics unit.
