Toyota Motor and Subaru plan to introduce a new electric vehicle (EV) in Japan, the U.S., and Europe by 2026, leveraging their partnership to reduce production costs and speed up development, Nikkei reported. Production is slated to begin at Subaru’s Yajima plant in Japan’s Gunma prefecture in January 2026, with a capacity of 15,000 to 20,000 units per month.
The new SUV will incorporate components from the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, models previously co-developed by the two automakers in 2022. By standardizing key parts, the companies aim to address high EV costs, making their vehicles more competitive in key global markets such as North America, Europe, and Japan.
Subaru, acknowledging the challenges of independent EV development, will rely on its collaboration with Toyota to enhance its electric vehicle lineup. The company has set a goal of selling 600,000 EVs annually by 2030, with half of its global sales projected to be electric vehicles.
