Toho Co. posted record quarterly profits as streaming revenue from “Godzilla -1.0” and strong performance of its animation titles drove earnings growth across its entertainment portfolio.
Operating profit jumped 26.9% to ¥52.8 billion ($353 million) in the nine months through November, while revenue rose 15.3% to ¥234.2 billion. The Tokyo-based company saw gains across its film distribution, animation, and theatrical divisions.
The company’s animation unit reported a 68.6% profit surge, powered by successful titles including “My Hero Academia” and “Jujutsu Kaisen.” International streaming rights and merchandise sales contributed significantly to the growth.
While theatrical attendance dropped 7.3% to 28 million visitors, box office hits like “Detective Conan” and “Kingdom” helped maintain momentum. The company operates 722 screens across Japan, including 56 joint ventures.
Toho maintained its full-year forecast of ¥62 billion in operating profit, suggesting a cautious outlook for the fourth quarter despite strong performance so far. The company has achieved 85.2% of its annual profit target with one quarter remaining in the fiscal year.
The entertainment group’s real estate division saw revenue growth but slightly lower profits due to renovation costs, even as vacancy rates remained low at 0.9%.
