TOHO CO., LTD. announced its ambitious “TOHO Mid-Term Plan 2028” today, positioning the next three years as a critical phase toward becoming a global entertainment powerhouse by its 100th anniversary in 2032. The company will allocate approximately ¥70 billion ($468 million) to develop content and IP while setting aside ¥120 billion ($802 million) for growth investments including strategic acquisitions.
The plan establishes a new “IP and Anime business” segment starting in fiscal year 2026, separating it from the Film business to enhance financial transparency of this key growth driver. TOHO aims to achieve an operating profit increase of 200% in this segment by 2032, while doubling TOHO animation’s workforce and increasing anime seasons from 14 to 30 per year.
For the iconic GODZILLA franchise, which recently celebrated its 70th anniversary and saw “GODZILLA MINUS ONE” win an Academy Award, TOHO will invest approximately ¥15 billion to fully scale the IP business through games, merchandise, and a new theatrical film.
TOHO reported strong financial results for the fiscal year ended February 2025, with operating revenue of ¥313.17 billion ($2.09 billion), up 10.5% year-on-year, and operating profit of ¥64.68 billion ($432 million), up 9.2%. For the upcoming three-year period, the company targets operating profit of ¥70 billion or more by FY2028.
A major initiative under the new plan is the “TOHO-ONE” project, with an investment of approximately ¥5 billion to develop a customer data platform and launch a membership service in Spring 2026, creating a unified experience across TOHO’s entertainment offerings. The company will also hire approximately 200 people over the next three years, focusing on content and IP, digital technology, and overseas business areas.
TOHO plans to increase its overseas net operating revenue ratio from 10% to 30% by 2032 by expanding offices beyond current locations in Tokyo, Singapore, Los Angeles, and New York, with plans for a European presence. This global push builds on recent international successes including “JUJUTSU KAISEN” (Season 2) earning Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024.
