Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is set to break records with a bold target of selling 25 million units of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) in the fiscal year ending March 2024, making it the highest-ever goal for a PlayStation console. Overcoming earlier semiconductor shortages that plagued its availability, SIE recently released a new PS5 model featuring increased storage capacity and a handheld device named the PlayStation Portal for remote gaming.
Hideaki Nishino, SIE’s senior vice president, emphasized the strategic timing of these releases, noting that the PS5 is now in its third year, a period when an increasing number of games optimized for its features are hitting the market. The company aims to leverage both content and hardware, including peripherals, for a robust year-end sales season.
Addressing past supply constraints, Nishino highlighted the complexity of PS5 manufacturing, dependent on around 2,000 parts, with any missing semiconductor preventing production. He assured that supply issues have been resolved by diversifying sourcing and expressed confidence in a PS5 abundance during this year’s holiday season.
Nishino also discussed the unique features of the PS5, such as high-speed technologies and a solid-state drive, reducing load times significantly. Notable games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 showcase the console’s capabilities with expansive maps and seamless gameplay. Despite industry shifts towards PC and mobile gaming, Nishino emphasized the convenience and accessibility of a dedicated console like the PS5, highlighting Sony’s strength in adapting game titles into TV dramas and movies to broaden the reach of their gaming content.
