Samsung SDI and General Motors have finalized an agreement to establish a joint venture focused on electric vehicle (EV) battery production in the United States. The venture, which was first agreed upon in April last year, will see both companies investing approximately $3.5 billion to construct a new battery manufacturing plant in New Carlisle, Indiana. The facility is expected to create over 1,600 jobs, bolstering the local economy.

The plant, situated on a 680-acre site, will initially have a production capacity of 27GWh per year, with plans to expand to 36GWh in the future. This capacity will support GM’s growing lineup of EVs, utilizing Samsung SDI’s advanced prismatic battery technology, which is designed to enhance driving range and safety.

Samsung SDI views this venture as a strategic entry into the North American EV market, leveraging GM’s strong market presence. The facility is scheduled to begin mass production by 2027, marking a significant step in both companies’ efforts to keep pace with the rapidly evolving EV industry. As the market continues to grow, the partnership underscores the commitment of both companies to remain at the forefront of innovation and production.
