Nintendo, the iconic Japanese game developer, is joining forces again with Illumination, the U.S.-based animation powerhouse, to create a sequel to their wildly successful Super Mario film. This announcement follows the massive global success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which premiered in April 2023 and raked in over $1.36 billion worldwide.

The much-anticipated sequel is set for a grand theatrical release on April 3, 2026, promising to captivate audiences in the U.S. and other territories with its bright and fun narrative. Renowned for his role in shaping the Mario franchise, Shigeru Miyamoto, alongside Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, will spearhead the project as co-producers, ensuring the film resonates with the essence of the beloved video game.

This collaboration underscores Nintendo’s strategic pivot towards expanding its entertainment footprint beyond traditional gaming. Following the announcement, Miyamoto expressed enthusiasm about enriching Mario’s world, hinting at an exciting storyline that will deepen fans’ connection to the franchise. As Nintendo ventures further into the film industry, including a forthcoming live-action adaptation of “The Legend of Zelda,” anticipation builds for what’s next in their evolving entertainment saga.
