MediaTek is taking a significant step in the AI applications market by integrating its smartphone technology with AR/MR devices. This move, which includes forming an alliance with Meta, aims to leverage the capabilities of MediaTek’s Dimensity series mobile phone chips. By using smartphones as platforms for Meta Quest devices, MediaTek is positioning itself to capitalize on the burgeoning business opportunities in 3D imaging and generative AI.

The immersive experience offered by 3D imaging is seen as a major market opportunity. Apple and Qualcomm have already recognized this potential, with Apple developing its own ecosystem through devices like the iPhone and Vision Pro helmet, and Qualcomm enhancing its collaboration with Google. With MediaTek entering the fray, the competition in the 3D imaging market intensifies among these top players.

Industry insiders highlight the rapid expansion of generative AI opportunities. Cloud service providers (CSPs) are heavily investing in AI servers, indicating that future demand for AI will span from the cloud to Edge devices, enabling AI applications on mobile phones and AR/MR devices.

Apple’s current AI strategy includes the Vision Pro MR device and plans to integrate advanced AI technology into the upcoming iPhone 16 series with iOS 18, enhancing its 3D photography capabilities and integration with Vision Pro.

Similarly, Qualcomm is collaborating with Google to integrate 3D imaging across mobile phones and head-mounted devices. Google has bolstered its hardware development team in Taiwan, working closely with semiconductor giants like TSMC to advance 3D imaging applications.

MediaTek’s partnership with Meta aims to seize these business opportunities in 3D imaging. The collaboration will focus on enhancing the AI capabilities of MediaTek’s Dimensity series and integrating 3D imaging with Meta’s Quest devices.

Analysts believe that AI applications extend beyond language models to include technologies that enhance user experiences, particularly in image processing and 3D imaging. As mobile device camera functions improve, AI-driven 3D imaging is expected to become a key feature, prompting a new wave of AI-powered mobile device upgrades.
