MediaTek Inc.’s subsidiary has purchased $17 million worth of preferred shares in Aeonsemi, increasing its stake in the California-based chip designer to 5.83%.

The Taiwanese semiconductor company, through its unit Digimoc Holdings Limited, acquired the shares at $14.2562 each, according to a filing late Wednesday. The investment is classified as a financial move rather than a strategic partnership.

Aeonsemi, headquartered in Santa Clara, specializes in analog, mixed-signal, and digital signal processing chips for communications, industrial, and automotive applications. The deal represents MediaTek’s growing interest in specialized semiconductor designers as the industry faces increasing demand for application-specific integrated circuits.

The transaction adds 11,920 shares to MediaTek’s existing holding of 14,170 shares in the US chip designer. This investment comes as Asian chipmakers seek to strengthen their positions in the competitive US semiconductor market, particularly in analog chip design, where demand continues to grow across multiple sectors.

MediaTek declined to provide additional details about its investment strategy or plans for future collaboration with Aeonsemi.
