Hyundai Mobis, a leading global supplier for electric vehicles, has initiated the construction of a new plant in Navarre, Spain, aimed at bolstering its presence in the European automotive sector. The plant, focused on Battery System Assembly (BSA), marks a critical step in the company’s European strategy, directly supporting Volkswagen, one of its major clients.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held on the 23rd local time, was attended by notable figures including María Chivite, Governor of Navarre, and Sebastian Marco, Mayor of Noain Municipality, alongside executives from Volkswagen. The event symbolizes the start of a project that aims to commence mass production by 2026.

This Spanish factory is part of Hyundai Mobis’ broader aim to adapt to the electrification era and expand its global footprint. Last year, the company secured a significant contract to supply BSA to Volkswagen, which has been instrumental in boosting its market position and operational stability.

BSAs are essential components of electric vehicles, incorporating electronic parts and the Battery Management System into the battery pack, which are crucial for safety and efficiency. The Spanish plant will play a vital role in developing high-capacity battery systems that enhance the performance of electric vehicles.

Jung In-bo, who heads the Mobis facility in Spain, emphasized the company’s commitment to being a long-term partner for Volkswagen and expanding their supply chain within Europe. The factory, covering an area equivalent to 21 soccer fields, is set to produce up to 360,000 battery systems annually. These systems will be integrated into Volkswagen’s next-generation electric vehicles, manufactured nearby in Pamplona.

With an investment of approximately 120 million Euros, excluding land and facilities, by 2030, Mobis is gearing up to set a benchmark in electrification technology, tailored specifically for the demands of global automotive markets. The strategic location in Navarre, close to major automotive hubs and bordering France, positions the factory as a gateway into mainland Europe, underlining its significance in Hyundai Mobis’ international strategy.
