Taiwan’s AU Optronics (AUO) is strategically positioning itself for closer collaboration with automakers through its recent acquisition of German auto parts manufacturer BHTC. The deal, valued at 600 million euros ($634 million), marks a significant move in AUO’s bid to gain direct insights into in-vehicle display trends and development.

While AUO is already a major player in the global in-vehicle display market, holding a notable position in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, the acquisition of BHTC offers a crucial touchpoint with automakers. BHTC, as a tier 1 supplier, has direct engagements with leading automakers including Audi, BMW, and the Mercedes-Benz Group. This positions AUO strategically in the upstream phases of new model development.
