Taiwan Fertilizer Co. (1722), Taiwan’s leading liquid ammonia supplier, has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Japan’s IHI Co., Ltd. The agreement, signed by Taiwan Fertilizer Chairman Li Sunrong and IHI Deputy Minister Hiroki Kobayashi, marks a significant step toward advancing ammonia energy solutions in Asia.

The partnership will explore the potential of liquid ammonia as a versatile energy source. Traditionally used in fertilizer production, liquid ammonia can also serve as shipping fuel, a hydrogen carrier, and a fuel for thermal power generation, offering substantial carbon reduction benefits. This initiative aligns with Japan’s broader efforts to combat climate change and transition to cleaner energy.

Japan, under Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s “Asian Net-Zero Emissions Community” initiative launched in 2022, is focusing on reducing carbon emissions from thermal power generation by integrating ammonia into its energy mix. IHI, a pioneer in ammonia energy technology, has successfully implemented a 20% coal-fired ammonia mixing at the Binan Power Plant, leading in global efforts for cleaner power generation.

The collaboration between Taiwan Fertilizer and IHI underscores the growing business opportunities for ammonia energy in Asia, particularly in Japan, which is actively seeking innovative solutions to meet its net-zero emissions targets by 2050. The partnership aims to harness IHI’s expertise in ammonia energy to develop sustainable and scalable clean energy solutions, further strengthening Taiwan-Japan ties in the renewable energy sector.
