SK On, a subsidiary of SK Innovation, is set to commence mass production of prismatic batteries for the first time, marking a notable expansion from its traditional focus on pouch-type batteries. The new batteries, known for their rigid aluminum casing and improved safety, will be supplied to China’s Geely Group, a prominent electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer.
The production line is being established at SK On’s second plant in Seosan, Chungnam, with full-scale mass production expected soon. This diversification into prismatic batteries, which offer greater resistance to external shocks, addresses concerns about the stability of pouch batteries and responds to shifting market demands.
SK On’s expansion is part of a larger effort to diversify its product offerings and remain competitive in the evolving EV market. Alongside prismatic batteries, the company is developing the 4680 cylindrical battery, Tesla’s preferred battery type, with mass production anticipated by 2026.
The partnership with Geely Group, which owns brands like Volvo and Polestar, is expected to provide a significant boost to SK On’s operations, following 11 consecutive quarters of losses. The company has already secured a contract to supply battery modules for Geely’s Polestar 5, set to begin production next year.
