Korean shipping giant HMM is pushing deeper into South American trade routes, launching a new container service that will connect Asian ports with Brazil’s eastern seaboard starting April.
The FL2 service marks HMM’s second dedicated route to South America’s east coast, complementing its existing FIL service. The vessels will sail from Busan through the Indian Ocean and around the Cape of Good Hope in a 77-day round trip.
The expansion comes as shipping companies seek new growth opportunities amid shifting global trade patterns. HMM is partnering with Japanese carrier ONE to operate the service, which will call at ports in South Korea, China, Singapore, and three Brazilian cities.
The company plans to extend its reach into Argentina and Uruguay through a proprietary feeder service from Brazil’s Rio Grande port, potentially cutting transit times to these markets.
While HMM officials say the move aims to enhance customer service, industry analysts note that carriers are increasingly targeting emerging markets as traditional routes become more competitive. The new service could also boost cargo volumes at South Korea’s Busan Port, a key regional hub.
The first vessel is scheduled to depart from Busan in early April, adding to HMM’s growing network of international shipping routes.
