South Korea’s Hanwha Systems has unveiled ambitious plans to establish a new space center dedicated to satellite development on Jeju Island. The Jeju Hanwha Space Center, to be located in the Hawon Techno Campus of Seogwipo City, is poised to become a pivotal hub for the development, manufacturing, and testing of satellites.
Spanning 11,443 square meters, the facility will feature a comprehensive setup across its two floors and a basement. The ground floor will be dedicated to satellite development, assembly, and both functional and performance testing. The upper floor will house the control room and office spaces, centralizing operations and administrative functions.
Hanwha Systems is targeting an aggressive production schedule, aiming to manufacture 4 to 8 satellites per month. This high output will be supported by advanced testing facilities, including duplicate equipment for thermal vacuum testing to verify satellite operability in space conditions, and near-field testing to evaluate satellite antenna performance.
The introduction of automated manufacturing and assembly lines is expected to enhance production efficiency and reduce the time required for testing processes. With these innovations, Hanwha Systems anticipates a significant increase in its production capacity.
Scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, the Jeju Hanwha Space Center represents a strategic move by Hanwha Systems to cement its position in the space industry under private leadership. This facility will not only bolster South Korea’s satellite production capabilities but also enable Hanwha Systems to expand its reach in both domestic and international space markets.
