Hanwha Systems has embarked on a significant venture by signing a contract with Leonardo, a European leader in aerospace and defense, to supply Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar antennas. These radars will be equipped on light combat aircraft, enhancing their operational capabilities. The deal marks the first export of Korean-developed AESA radar technology, specifically the antenna component, which is integral to the radar system and represents over half of its market cost.
This collaboration underscores Hanwha Systems’ innovative strides in radar technology, initially developed for the Korean KF-21 fighter jets. The exported AESA antenna, known as the AAU-AESA Antenna Unit, will be a pivotal element in Leonardo’s production of advanced radar systems for light attack aircraft. Production and integration of the complete AESA radar units are scheduled to begin in 2026.
The strategic partnership not only highlights Hanwha Systems’ capabilities in high-tech radar development but also solidifies Korea’s position as a leader in aerospace technology on the global stage. The move is expected to open new markets for Hanwha Systems, leveraging their advanced AESA radar technology for broader military and defense applications.
