Hanwha Aerospace, in partnership with SK Enmove, introduced the world’s first immersion cooling Energy Storage System (ESS) on September 10, a significant innovation in battery safety. The technology, showcased at a Seoul briefing, aims to revolutionize the ESS market by using thermal fluid to isolate lithium-ion battery cells, preventing thermal runaway and minimizing safety risks such as insulation failures.
The system, which has received international certifications, offers superior fire prevention compared to traditional air- and water-cooled models. SK Enmove’s advanced cooling fluids, leveraging their expertise in base oils, play a critical role in ensuring the battery’s non-flammable properties.
Beyond marine applications, the companies are eyeing broader use cases for the technology, including data centers and electric vehicles. This innovation positions Hanwha Aerospace and SK Enmove at the forefront of Korea’s green energy storage solutions, as they aim to capture a share of the expanding power efficiency market, projected to reach ₩42 trillion by 2040.
