Universal Music LLC is acquiring a 66% stake in Japanese music label A-Sketch, expanding its footprint in anime and voice actor management as the entertainment giant seeks to capture younger audiences in Asia’s largest music market.
The deal, announced on February 14, will see Universal taking over the entire shareholding of Amuse Inc. in the joint venture company. KDDI Corp. is expected to retain its minority stake in A-Sketch, which was established in 2008.
A-Sketch has carved out a niche in Japan’s competitive music industry by focusing on anime soundtracks and voice actor management. The company has invested in popular anime productions including “Skip and Loafer” and “Noragami,” while managing rising voice actors turned musicians like Daiki Yamashita and Rie Takahashi.
The acquisition marks Universal Music’s latest push to strengthen its content portfolio in Japan, the world’s second-largest music market. The deal will give the label access to A-Sketch’s roster of young creators and artists, while offering them opportunities for global expansion through Universal’s international network.
