Sony Group Corp. unveiled plans to adapt its hit samurai game “Ghost of Tsushima” into an animated series, marking a significant collaboration between its entertainment divisions. The announcement came during the company’s press conference at CES 2025 in Las Vegas.
The series, slated for release in 2027, will be based on the game’s multiplayer mode “Legends” and co-produced by Sony subsidiaries Crunchyroll and Aniplex. The game has sold nearly 10 million copies since its 2020 release.
The project brings together key talent from the anime industry, including director Takanobu Mizuno, known for “Star Wars: Visions,” and writer Gen Urobuchi of “Madoka Magica” fame. Animation studio Kamikaze Douga, which produced “Batman Ninja,” will handle the production.
The announcement highlights Sony’s push to strengthen collaboration between its gaming, music, and film units – historically known for operating independently. During the 50-minute presentation, Sony Group COO Hiroki Totoki and other executives dedicated significant time to entertainment content, with anime receiving particular emphasis.
The project represents the first major collaboration between U.S.-based Crunchyroll, owned by Sony Pictures, and Japanese anime producer Aniplex, a Sony Music subsidiary, despite their partial ownership ties.
